About Hamil Bros
We're open books with a bit of redaction. The foundational concept of Hamil Bros Studios predates its official establishment as a video production company. For Ross, the seed was planted during his high school years, specifically within his Spanish II class, a period where he occasionally enlisted Jacob’s involvement in his creative endeavors.
This early collaboration hinted at a future partnership built on shared interests and a nascent understanding of visual storytelling.
Jacob’s initial foray into this world, though brief, occurred in 2012 when he began working alongside Ross. During this time, Jacob was enrolled in a multimedia class, and it was Ross who provided significant assistance in helping him produce a mock movie trailer titled “6 STRIN6S.” This project served as a pivotal moment, solidifying their collaborative dynamic and exposing Jacob to the intricacies of video production in a more formal setting.
The business itself officially commenced operations in 2011. Since its inception, Hamil Bros Studios has experienced remarkable growth, demonstrating an exponential trajectory. Starting with modest commercial budgets, sometimes as low as $500, the company has successfully expanded its capabilities and client base to handle projects with budgets soaring upwards of $500,000.
This significant increase in project scale reflects the company’s commitment to quality, its evolving expertise, and its ability to deliver high-value productions, cementing its position as a formidable player in the video production industry.

Ross Hamil
Owner/Creative DIrector
I grew up in Odessa, Texas, where I spent my early years playing city baseball, shooting competition archery, and doing gymnastics. I also hunted with my dad… A lot.
I began my video career around the age of 15 years old, my sophomore year at Midland Christian School. Having grown up loving movies, and television shows, I didn’t really know that it was a field that I would eventually end up in.
In the tenth grade, I was taking my second required year of Spanish. My teacher, Mrs. Terri Crockett, assigned our class a video project. The assignment: a “fashion show” showing the students’ comprehension of the Spanish words for different articles of clothing. When she made the assignment, she took some time out of class to show examples that previous students had turned in.
I remember sitting there and thinking to myself, ‘these are horrible. Doesn’t anyone try to have fun with these?
They were boring and lacked any kind of imagination. It was the kind of stuff that it just seemed no one did more than they needed to just get by. Now, understand that I put in very little effort in school, but, it just wasn’t my thing. But, something just clicked when I got the assignment.
While my project was, for all practical purposes, terrible, it was fun. Everyone loved it. If our information is correct, that video project was shown as an example by my teacher up until her retirement (15+ years).
Flash forward a couple years and I had convinced my parents to invest in some editing software (Pinnacle Studio) and a whopping 120gb hard drive. Other students were hiring me to shoot and edit their projects and, at one point during my senior year, I had been hired by the softball coach to shoot a banquet video and was sent home from school until it was completed.
Over the next several years, I shot several weddings and music video projects, but, nothing serious.
In 2011, after parting ways with a band of musicians I had been playing with, I decided to reinvest in some newer equipment. I started a small wedding video business. In the summer of 2011 I received a phone call from one of my high school coaches requesting my services for my high school alma mater’s football team.
It was my first opportunity to finally do my video work full time. I shot football for two years alongside shooting weddings. During my time shooting football, I transitioned into shooting television commercials. I gained rapid popularity because I was offering services, especially in the realm of visual effects, that were not available in the greater West Texas area.
My visual effects work has spread internationally and continues to be utilized in helping businesses further their brands.
Outside of my professional life, I spend a lot of time with my family.
At the ripe age of 40 years old, I began taking karate with my son. We are learning the art of Korean Tang Soo Do from our wonderful masters at West Texas Karate.
Beyond that, Jacob and I have a hard rock band, LABOR XII. I also attend Raintree Christian Church with my family where I play guitar and drums in the worship band as well as lead worship from time to time.

Growing up in West Texas, in Odessa, I was always surrounded by awesome stories. Ever since I was little, I’ve loved movies, and that passion came straight from my parents and grandparents. Movies weren’t just something we watched; they were how we connected, explored new worlds, and understood life. And just as much as I loved movies, I loved music too. All of it together created this cool mix of art that really shaped my early life and still sticks with me today.
So, I got into music when I was eight, right around the time Ross was really getting into video production for his Spanish class. Somehow, I ended up as “talent” – and I use that term loosely – in one of his early videos. Even though it was pretty basic, that first performance totally lit a fire under me: I knew I had to be a musician.
High school was basically all about that dream. My days were packed: I was always sketching, practicing guitar till my fingers hurt, and writing tons of songs about all my teenage angst. Looking back, they were probably pretty melodramatic, kind of whiny and just about how “tormented” my high school life felt. But every note and every lyric I wrote just cemented that music was what I was meant to do. Haha!
I kinda fell into video production. My first big gig was with Ross—we suddenly had to film a wedding in San Antonio. Problem was, it was the same weekend I was supposed to move out of my dorms for the summer. But the pay was good, and honestly, I still wasn’t super into video back then.
After that, I kept helping Ross out on different projects. We did all sorts of stuff, from high school football games on Friday nights to a commercial for a local furniture and interior decoration store in Midland. Even though I wasn’t passionate about it at first, each of these jobs ended up pulling me further into the whole video production world.
I don’t honestly remember the defining moment that I decided that production is what I wanted to do with my life, but here we are! I hope you enjoy learning a little bit about us and how we got to where we are!

Industry Accolades
2014
Illumination Experience - Dallas
In the fall of 2014, Ross and Jacob attended Shane Hurlbut’s Illumination/Experience workshop and masterclass. This was a two-day event where they learned directly from the director of photography responsible for movies such as Terminator Salvation, Act of Valor, and Into the Badlands.
This proved to not only porovide valuable information, but friendships that span the entire industry all over the United States.
2014
After Effects World - Seattle
Immediately after the Illumination Experience, Jacob and Ross traveled from Lubbock to Seattle for the After Effects World Conference. Professionals from all over the world came to learn from the top experts. In addition to the breakout sessions, the keynote speakers included Jayse Hansen (Iron Man 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Andrew Kramer of Video Copilot.
Aside from the educational side of things, they were able to meet plugin/software developers and vendors such as Maxon, Pond5, and BorisFX.
2015
Sound Advice Tour - Houston
Having written a well-received review of the Illumination/Experience Tour, Ross and Jacob were invited by the tour host, MZED, to attend and review another workshop. This workshop was called the Sound Advice Tour and was to be taught by Frank Serafini (known for his sound effects work on TRON). Unfortunately, Frank was unable to make the tour and Mark Edward Lewis was chosen as his replacement. This course was a day-long crash course in everything audio.
2016
Cinema Sound - Lubbock
Due to the wild success of the Sound Advice Tour, another course was planned through MZED. If Sound Advice were the Cliff’sNotes of audio, Cinema Sound was the encyclopedia. The Hamil Bros did not simply attend this course, they produced it.
Starting with the most basic information in audio, to advanced mixing techniques, and the biology of human hearing, the course was nothing if not comprehensive.
Clocking in at nearly 80 hours of intense education, it is no stretch to say that Hamil Bros Studios are the foremost experts in audio for video in the greater West Texas area.
2016
Hurlbut Workshop - Los Angeles
Jacob traveled to Burbank, CA to attend a Hurlbut Visuals cinematography workshop over the course of three days. Those three days were action packed with invaluable knowledge imparted by Hollywood level Cinematographer, Shane Hurlbut. The course covered everything from big set power distribution, camera builds, lensing, lighting for day interiors and night exteriors, gimbal operation with a full team for each camera, to poor man’s process for car night interiors, and so much more. The course really laid the foundation for working with larger production units and how to communicate with each department to get the best possible outcome.
