Inside the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials

We have been posting about Affinity Steel, in Midland, TX for several years. Why? Because we have been creating their Super Bowl commercials consistently during this period.

We have done ads from Cavemen to talking animals. We really have run the gamut.

Typically, Affinity Steel chooses a humorous and creative approach, but this year, the decision was made to go more conservative.

With the grand opening of their new location in September of 2024, the Super Bowl Commercials were designed to showcase their new Midland facility and highlight the innovative technology and offerings available.

After finalizing the script, we scheduled to shoot in January, which was cutting it very close for Super Bowl time.

Meet the Visionaries

The Crew Behind Affinity Steel’s 2025 Super Bowl Commercials

We expanded our crew to meet the tight deadline. Here’s a look at the key players:

Director of Photography

Any time we can make it happen, we will gladly bring our favorite DP, William Hellmuth, to our shoots. You may recall us posting about William in our articles about Champion Xpress.

William, as always, brought his own flavor to the production. Every shot was meticulously planned and executed to perfection. From interiors to exteriors, everything looked fantastic.

There was no doubt he was the right choice.

Get a Grip

For our grip, we brought out Tony (aka: Pocket Cinema Tony); one of the many friends we made on the Champion Xpress job.

There is something to be said for having someone on set who knows the equipment as well as we do and, without Tony, this production would have taken way longer than necessary.

From building lights and modifiers on stands to trucking them around the entire facility, Tony was the oil that kept this production machine running smoothly.

Audio Solutions

The final piece of the puzzle was hiring someone to run audio for us. The scripts called for employees speaking on camera and that adds some complications in certain respects.

Our go-to sound recordist was otherwise engaged for the dates we needed, so we reached out to another friend we had made previously: Landon.

In August of 2023, our band, LABOR XII played a show in Dallas at a little bar called O’Reilley’s. We had no idea what we were getting into at that club, but what we did find out is that the sound guy, Landon, knew what he was doing.

After a few early bumps in the road getting started, Landon noticed one of the stickers on our laptop. It was a Tentacle Sync sticker, which he recognized. That sparked the conversation of talking about audio for cinema. As it turned out, that’s what Landon’s day job was and we quickly added him to our roster.

When we called him about the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl commercials job and he jumped right in.

One of the extra benefits of bringing Landon is that he was eager to help outside of running audio. If we needed something and everyone else was occupied, he was there to get it done.

The Arrival in Midland, TX

Jacob and I arrived in Midland, TX on Sunday afternoon at the location for the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials. Brandon graciously offered to open their shop so we could park the trailer in a more secure location.

Once the trailer was dropped off we headed to the airport.

Since William and Tony were coming in from California, we decided to fly them out. Once they landed, we were waiting, and we picked up right where we had left off a year before, just like no time had passed.

Cameras: Essential Care for Optics

For the Affinity Steel shoot, our primary objective was to deliver visuals that truly captured the essence of the brand, requiring us to deploy our absolute A-game. Fortunately, over the past fifteen years, we’ve meticulously built an equipment arsenal that empowers us to consistently achieve such high standards. This production, part of the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials campaign, demanded nothing short of excellence in video production.

One of the serendipitous moments leading up to this production was the timing of our friend Thomas Sigurdsson’s equipment sale. Approximately a month before the shoot date, Thomas, known for his expertise at Northern Lighting LA, put some stands on the market. This presented a timely opportunity for us to acquire four additional combo stands and four baby stands. This acquisition significantly augmented our existing inventory, not only increasing the sheer number of stands available but also critically enhancing our capacity to support heavier lighting and grip setups, ensuring stability and versatility on set.

Our camera choice for this project was exclusively the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K. This powerful cinema camera was paired with a sophisticated combination of lenses: the pristine Tokina Cinema Vistas and the versatile Tokina Cinema 25-75mm zoom. This particular lens package provided us with exceptional optical quality and the flexibility needed to capture a wide range of shots, from sweeping wide angles to intimate close-ups, all while maintaining a consistent cinematic look.

A truly unique aspect of this shoot was our privileged access to an early release version of the Blackmagic Pyxis monitor. This cutting-edge piece of equipment, still in its developmental stages, required a beta firmware update to be uploaded directly to the Pyxis camera itself. This pre-release access provided us with enhanced monitoring capabilities and a glimpse into future technological advancements, further solidifying our commitment to leveraging the latest tools in our craft.

The night before production officially commenced, our team members William and Ross dedicated considerable time to meticulously performing the necessary camera update. This crucial step ensured that the Pyxis camera and its new monitor would function seamlessly, preventing any potential technical disruptions during the intense filming schedule.

While at our AirBNB in Midland, TX, we also undertook the vital task of ensuring all our Blueshape Batteries were fully charged and ready for action. Our extensive battery collection, ranging from the compact Granite Mini 95s to the robust Granite 290s, provided ample power to sustain our camera and ancillary equipment throughout long shooting days, minimizing downtime and maximizing efficiency.

The final, essential touch for our camera setup involved integrating the Tilta Nucleus M follow focus system. This precise wireless follow focus unit allowed for smooth and accurate focus pulls, critical for achieving sharp and dynamic imagery. This was seamlessly combined with our Vaxis Storm wireless video setup, which transmitted a high-quality, low-latency video feed to our directors’ and clients’ monitors, enabling real-time review and collaboration on set.

Lighting: Shining in the darkness

For the Affinity Steel shoot, as with many of our productions, we exclusively relied on the comprehensive range of Aputure and Amaran lights. These brands have become our go-to for their exceptional quality, reliability, and versatility, allowing us to sculpt light with precision and create the desired mood for every scene.

Our lighting package for this project included the powerful Aputure Nova P300c, a full-color RGBWW LED panel known for its rich color rendition and broad creative possibilities. We also heavily utilized the Aputure 1200d, a high-output daylight LED fixture that provided immense brightness, perfect for simulating natural sunlight or creating powerful key lights. Complementing these larger units were numerous Amaran 300C and 150Cs. These more compact, yet still potent, LED lights offered excellent flexibility for fill light, accent lighting, or practical effects, allowing us to fine-tune the illumination across the set.

Crucially, we cannot overlook the invaluable contribution of the Amaran tube lights. These versatile linear LED fixtures were consistently deployed throughout the set, often hidden within the frame or used as practical elements to add subtle accents, define spaces, or create dramatic backlighting effects. Their ability to deliver soft, even light in a slender form factor made them indispensable for achieving nuanced and visually compelling results.

This level of gear coordination, combined with our experienced team and creative vision, exemplifies what sets Hamil Bros apart in video production projects across Texas and beyond. From concept to execution, our equipment choices were instrumental in achieving the cinematic quality expected.

The Shoot: A Two-Day Super Bowl Video Production

Making the Most of What You Have

The Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials Production happened over two very full days, each dedicated to a different side of Affinity Steel. Instead of focusing just on camera specs or gear lists, this was about giving viewers a sense of walking into the shop and seeing what makes Affinity Steel unique.

Day 1: Store Front Focus

Showcasing the Affinity Steel Showroom

Our first day focused on the storefront of Affinity Steel. After assembling our Blackmagic Pyxis camera, Tokina Vista Primes, and the Tilta Nucleus follow focus system, we began filming.

We captured an immersive establishing shot pushing through the front doors, providing viewers the sensation of entering the store for the first time.

The rest of Day 1 involved shooting b-roll footage. The Affinity Steel store had numerous products to feature, and we carefully dressed each aisle to appear visually appealing on camera. Utilizing equipment such as the Dana Dolly and Aputure Nova P300C lighting, we ensured each shot looked polished.

We also filmed engaging customer interaction segments. William created visually striking footage using the Aputure Lightstorm 600D, Amaran 300C, and Matthews 8×8’ Voodoo Cloth.

Next, we filmed talking-head segments featuring an Affinity Steel employee delivering lines in both English and Spanish. Lighting for these shots involved the Aputure 1200d, 600d, and P300C Nova with various diffusions.

Our final shot for Day 1 was an exterior sequence, utilizing the 1200D as backlight and natural sunlight as the key, softened by a 4×4’ half soft frost diffusion. Despite wind and traffic challenges, Tony ensured equipment stability.

Day 2: Manufacturing Shop Spotlight

Day 2 of the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials production concentrated on Affinity Steel’s manufacturing facility. We began with talking-head footage near the manufacturing floor, utilizing the Tokina Cinema 25-75mm lens for a dramatic crash zoom effect synchronized with background activity such as forklifts and hoists.

This complex sequence required multiple takes but ultimately resulted in a compelling scene for the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials.

Next, we filmed at the drive-through loading area, an environment with limited lighting and freezing temperatures. Despite these challenges, we captured dynamic shots featuring large materials loaded onto trailers.

The day concluded with b-roll footage of machinery, including a roll-former machine that transforms sheet metal into various construction profiles. William’s moody lighting and cinematic camera movement created visually impactful scenes.

To complement our ground footage, we brought in Shawn from West Texas Aerials. Shawn, our trusted aerial cinematographer, captured essential aerial shots of the new facility, enhancing the visual narrative of the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials.

Post Production: Editing Under Pressure

The editing process for Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials was straightforward but required quick turnaround. With less than two weeks to finalize the commercials and film another ad for Spencer Dobbs, efficiency was critical.

Music selection was meticulous, pairing visuals perfectly with audio. Motion titles further highlighted key points, increasing viewer engagement. However, translating graphics into Spanish presented unique challenges, requiring specialized assistance.

Once the English commercials were complete, we delivered them promptly to Affinity Steel.

Trouble in Paradise

Initial feedback was mostly positive, but we faced an unexpected issue—missing shots of specific sheet metal colors and profiles needed for the commercials.

To address this, Jacob made an urgent trip from Lubbock to Midland and back, quickly staging and filming the missing pieces in our workshop.

We executed whip pans and numerous Dana Dolly shots with varying light setups to highlight each profile effectively. After editing these new shots into the commercials, we completed the project swiftly.

The rapid timeline from production to delivery was intense, but thanks to our dedicated crew, we successfully delivered exceptional Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials on schedule.

Why Affinity Steel Chose This Super Bowl Video Production Approach

This production balanced quality, speed, and storytelling, making the Affinity Steel 2025 Super Bowl Commercials truly stand out — showcasing Affinity Steel’s new Midland facility while meeting the tight Super Bowl deadline.

Affinity Steel didn’t just want another commercial — they wanted something that reflected their growth and commitment to the Midland community. The choice to focus on both storefront and shop areas, as well as adding Spanish-language versions, wasn’t about checking marketing boxes. It was about making sure every customer, from first-timers to long-time contractors, could see themselves in the ad.

Bringing together a seasoned crew, working with trusted partners like William, Tony, Landon, and Shawn, and pulling long days in tough conditions helped us create a final product that was authentic to Affinity Steel’s brand and customer experience.
