Zoning Board Video Production Lubbock: A Monumental Twist on Video Production
Exploring the New Era of Video Production in Lubbock
In a significant development in December of 2024, our team was approached to embark on a compelling zoning board video production project. The client was none other than the esteemed Liggett Law Group, a prominent legal firm situated right here in the vibrant city of Lubbock, TX. This particular endeavor promised to be more than just a typical video production; it presented a unique challenge that would ultimately lead to an innovative solution.
The initial encounter that set this project in motion occurred during a another video production at their office. Ted, a key contact at the Liggett Law Group, unexpectedly asked me to step outside for a private discussion. While the request to move outdoors for a conversation struck me as somewhat unusual, I complied, curious about the nature of the urgent matter he wished to discuss.
Once outside, Ted immediately directed my attention to a temporary sign prominently displayed in front of their building. He explained that this sign was in violation of local ordinances and was therefore illegal. He then elaborated on their current efforts to rectify this situation: they were in the midst of preparing a formal request to the City of Lubbock Zoning Board of Adjustment to obtain permission for the installation of a permanent monument sign. This new sign was intended to provide a more effective and compliant solution for their business identification.
However, the path to approval was far from straightforward. Ted revealed a critical hurdle: the zoning board was already poised to deny their request. This pre-emptive denial, while seemingly harsh, wasn’t entirely without merit. The proposed monument sign, as initially conceived, would indeed be in violation of certain established zoning regulations within Lubbock. Given the specific layout and constraints of their property, there were limited alternative locations that would satisfy both their visibility needs and the city’s stringent zoning requirements. Nevertheless, it was also noted that numerous exceptions to similar regulations had been granted in the surrounding area, suggesting a precedent for flexibility.
This challenging scenario set the stage for the crucial intervention of the Hamil Bros. Ted’s vision for our involvement was clear and precise: he wanted us to produce a compelling demonstration video. This video would serve as a pivotal piece of evidence to be presented to the Lubbock zoning board during a public hearing, where the Liggett Law Group would make their case for the permanent sign. The fundamental objective of the video was relatively straightforward: to visually demonstrate the current lack of effective business identification for east-bound traffic due to the building’s orientation and surrounding infrastructure.
While the core request seemed simple enough—a direct visual representation of the problem—we, at Hamil Bros, recognized an opportunity to elevate the presentation significantly. Driven by our commitment to delivering exceptional results and leveraging our expertise, we decided to take the concept a substantial step further. We proposed an innovative approach: generating a highly detailed 3D model of the envisioned permanent monument sign.
This digital replica would then be seamlessly integrated into real-world footage of the property through the advanced technique of visual effects compositing. This sophisticated method would allow the zoning board members to experience a remarkably realistic visualization of how the proposed sign would appear in its intended location. More importantly, it would enable them to accurately assess its potential impact on traffic flow and overall aesthetics, providing a comprehensive understanding of its benefits, or any potential drawbacks, in a way that static plans or simple photographs simply could not. This strategic enhancement aimed to provide the zoning board with an unparalleled level of clarity and insight, significantly bolstering the Liggett Law Group’s request for approval.

Our initial and most critical step involved the meticulous creation of a 3D model of the proposed sign. This model was not conjured from thin air; rather, it was precisely based on a preliminary mockup meticulously crafted by the talented Mark Umstot, whose design provided the foundational blueprint for our digital construction.
I dedicated a significant amount of time and effort to this phase, working primarily within Element 3D and After Effects. While the speed of assembly necessitated a certain crudeness in its initial form, the model served its intended purpose with remarkable efficacy. Its primary function was to provide a visual representation of the sign within its proposed environment, allowing for early assessment of its scale, placement, and overall aesthetic impact on the landscape. This preliminary 3D rendering, despite its rapid development, proved invaluable in the iterative design process, enabling us to identify and address potential issues before moving into more resource-intensive stages of production.
Shooting Our Shot in Lubbock Zoning Board Video Production
Our video production journey for the Lubbock Zoning Board project spanned two distinct days, each dedicated to capturing specific types of footage essential for the final presentation. The first day was focused on the parking lot footage, while the second was dedicated to dynamic driving shots.
For the parking lot sequences, Hamil Bros Studios leveraged our trusted Dana Dolly, a versatile camera slider, in conjunction with the Emotimo motion control system. This sophisticated setup allowed us to precisely control camera movements, ensuring repeatability and accuracy. We mounted our Blackmagic Pyxis camera onto the dolly and opted for our selection of high-quality Tokina Cinema Vista lenses. This particular combination was chosen strategically to facilitate the motion tracking process in post-production. By having calculated and repeatable camera moves, solving the camera track for integrating the 3D model of the proposed sign became an incredibly straightforward task, minimizing potential headaches and saving valuable time during editing.
To further enhance the realism of the 3D model and ensure it seamlessly integrated into the environment, we employed our Insta360 camera to capture a High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI). An HDRI is a 360-degree panoramic photo that captures a wide range of light intensities. In 3D rendering, this HDRI serves a crucial purpose: it provides realistic lighting and reflections for the 3D model, making it appear as if it truly exists within the photographed environment.
While not common everyday knowledge, utilizing an HDRI is a powerful technique that significantly contributes to the believability and immersion of 3D assets within a live-action scene. From the parking lot, we captured various angles, not only showcasing the proposed sign but also strategically including another existing monument sign located across the street. This was important as it demonstrated that the zoning allowance requested by Ted for his sign had already been granted to a similar structure in the immediate vicinity, providing a visual precedent for his proposal.
The second day of shooting was dedicated to capturing the driving footage, which added a dynamic and contextual element to the presentation. For this, we deployed our MovMax Razor Arm, a state-of-the-art shock-absorbing arm designed to attach to a DJI RS3 gimbal. This innovative setup allowed us to capture incredibly stable and smooth moving footage from our vehicle as we navigated the streets of Lubbock.
It was an exhilarating part of the job, adding an exciting dimension to the production. For these driving shots, we utilized our Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera paired with our Veydra Prime lenses. The synergy between this camera and lens combination was exceptional, truly a “match made in Heaven” in terms of image quality and creative flexibility.
Once all the necessary footage was captured, the focus shifted to the post-production phase: building the 3D composites. This stage proved remarkably smooth, largely due to the meticulous planning and execution during the shooting phase. The footage tracked with impressive ease, requiring minimal adjustments. After a few passes of refining the tracking data, the 3D model of the sign was precisely placed within the live-action scenes, seamlessly integrating into the environment.
With the 3D work complete, the video was ready for presentation to Ted. We promptly scheduled a meeting at his office, where his accomplice, Gary, joined us. Together, we began the collaborative editing process. While a significant amount of footage was ultimately trimmed from the final product, this was a conscious decision. Our primary goal was to ensure the video was concise, impactful, and respectful of the time and attention of everyone attending the Lubbock Zoning Board hearing. The objective was to present a clear, compelling case for Ted’s sign proposal without unnecessary embellishment, focusing on the essential information that would aid the board in their decision-making process.

Zoning Board Presentation Day in Lubbock, TX
The culmination of weeks of meticulous planning, strategic video production, and tireless preparation finally arrived: the day Team Liggett would present their proposal and the accompanying video to the Lubbock Zoning Board. The air in the city council chambers was thick with anticipation, a mix of nervousness and determination from the team.
Leading off the presentation was Terry, the seasoned project planner. With a calm demeanor and an encyclopedic knowledge of the project’s intricacies, he stepped up to the podium. He unfurled detailed blueprints, meticulously laying out the technical specifications and the precise requests being made of the board.
Terry didn’t just present raw data; he wove a compelling narrative, showcasing “before” photographs of the property when it was merely an empty lot, then transitioning to images of the newly constructed building, highlighting how it had undeniably enhanced the aesthetic and functionality of the neighborhood. He emphasized a crucial point: an allowance had already been granted for the building’s construction, and the proposed sign, the subject of the zoning request, would not exceed the established parameters of that initial approval. His delivery was a masterclass in eloquence and precision, leaving no room for ambiguity.
Next to present was Ted, a man known throughout the community as “The Heavy Hitter” – and for good reason. Ted took the stage with a confident stride, his reputation preceding him. He didn’t just present the zoning board video production project; he built an unshakeable case for the sign’s allowance. He systematically addressed every potential concern the board might have. He assured them that the sign’s placement had been carefully considered to ensure it would not impede traffic visibility, thus maintaining public safety on the roadways. He then painted a picture of its proposed aesthetic, emphasizing that it would be a visually appealing addition to the landscape, blending seamlessly with the existing architecture.
Furthermore, he highlighted its practical benefits, underscoring its role as a vital wayfinding device, guiding visitors and customers with clarity and ease. And finally, a point that resonated deeply in Lubbock, Ted gave the ultimate reassurance: no trees would be moved, damaged, or otherwise impacted during the sign’s construction. For those not intimately familiar with Lubbock’s ethos, the value placed on trees in this semi-arid environment is exceptionally high, a detail Ted understood and leveraged effectively.
After Ted concluded his powerful presentation, the Lubbock zoning board entered into a period of deliberation, their hushed discussions a testament to the weight of the decision before them. The tension in the room was palpable as they weighed the arguments, the technical details, and the community impact. Finally, they were ready to put the matter to a vote.
It was then that one of the seasoned members of the Lubbock zoning board offered a truly remarkable commendation. She expressed her sincere wish that every request brought before the board would be accompanied by a video of such caliber. Her rationale was clear and profound: the video had effectively removed all elements of conjecture and imagination from the proposal. It had put everyone, the board members and the petitioners alike, on precisely the same page. They all shared the same, clear, and comprehensive information, eliminating any need for guesswork or differing interpretations.
The moment of truth arrived. The vote was called, and to the collective relief and elation of Team Liggett, the outcome was unanimous: the allowance for the sign was officially approved.
As we exited Lubbock City Hall, a profound sense of accomplishment settled over us. We all walked a little taller, basking in the glow of a hard-won, yet undeniably significant, victory. It had been a truly good day, a day that culminated in the proud declaration, “Hamil Bros: Zoning Board Approved.” This was more than just a project; it was a testament to the power of clear communication, strategic planning, and the compelling impact of well-executed video production in achieving tangible results.
